In the Name of ALLAH, The Beneficent, The Merciful
The topic of this post was inspired by the many recent online clashes amongst believers in the Nation of Islam-under the leadership of The Hon. Louis Farrakhan.
These online clashes have been manifested greatly on Facebook and I would assume other places where we congregate online. As Muslims and practitioners of the faith of Islam we are commanded to be of those who seek peace and not aggressors by words, deeds or actions. However, we have witnessed clashes between FOI and MGT, Nation of Islam vs Orthodox Muslims, theological debates between brethren, anti-Farrakhan rants, male bashing and female bashing in return.
All of these conflicts serve to cause division within the Ummah(community of believers) and make us easy prey in the hands of our open enemy.
As we will see further not only is this non-productive and divisive it is a sin to rent asunder the unity of Muslims.
We are commanded in Sura 3:101
"Hold fast by the rope of ALLAH all together and be not divided."
Further Sura 23:52 reminds us
"And surely this your community is one community, and I am your Lord, so keep your duty to me."
The unity of the Muslim community is of the utmost importance and anything that breaks our unity is actually a major sin. This brings us to understanding the Arabic word Fitna or Fitnah.
According to Huda, author of The Everything Understanding Islam Book, Fitna is described as the following:
"The word fitna comes from an Arabic verb which means to "seduce, tempt, or lure." There are many shades of meaning, mostly referring to a feeling of disorder or unrest.
Variations of the word fitna are found throughout the Qur'an to describe the trials and temptations that may face the believers. The term has also been used to describe divisions which occurred in the early years of the Muslim community.
In modern usage, it is used to describe forces that cause controversy, fragmentation, scandal, chaos, or discord within the Muslim community, disturbing social peace and order."
The Holy Qur'an Sura 9:47 describes Fitnah as division.
“And they would have hurried about in your midst (spreading corruption) and sowing sedition among you [yabghoonakum al-fitnah]."
Further in The Holy Qur'an Sura 24:19 our attention is drawn to the seriousness of causing conflict amongst the believers.
"Those who love that scandal should circulate respecting those who believe, for them is a grievous chastisement in this world and the Hereafter. And Allah knows, while you know not."
Some have stated that they are just "telling the truth" or "keeping it real". I would ask you to take into consideration a few points as we conclude this topic.
Sura 104(Yusef Ali translation) entitled The Slanderer gives divine guidance regarding our interactions as a community(Ummah)
"Woe to every (kind of) scandal-monger and backbiter."
Footnote 6266 of the aforementioned Ayat gives further depth to the topic.
"Three vices are here condemned in the strongest terms: (1) scandal-mongering, talking or suggesting evil of men or women by word or innuendo, or behavior, or mimicry, or Sarcasm, or insult; (2) detracting from their character behind their backs, even if the things suggested are true, where the motive is evil."
Therefore, even in "telling the truth" or "keeping it real" where harm comes to the unity of believers that is a serious sin.
When you express your truth ask these questions:
1) Is what you saying going to build up the Ummah, unite Muslims and edify one another?
2) Are you offering something beneficial to dialogue or are you just venting your own personal hurt and disappointments to generalize a segment of the Muslim Ummah?
3) What are your intentions in stating what you are stating? Everything in Islam is judged by our intentions regarding the action.
"So let us rise ye Muslims fight for your own." Muslim Fight Song
